MOTION TO APPOINT KAREN TRENT TO FILL THE ADVOCATE FOR LOW-INCOME PERSONS VACANCY OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING ADVISORY COMMITTEE (AHAC).
Summary Explanation and Background
1. As a recipient of State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) funds, the City of Pembroke Pines established an Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) in 2008, as required by Florida Statutes, Sec. 420.9076. The AHAC is responsible for reviewing and evaluating local plans, policies, procedures, land development regulations, the Comprehensive Plan, and other aspects of Pembroke Pines' housing activities that impact the production of affordable housing. While the City convened this Board triennially through 2018, it has since transitioned to holding meetings on an annual basis.
2. On December 14, 2022, the City Commission passed Ordinance No. 2002, which allows AHAC members to serve continuously until such time that they either choose not to continue serving or until the City Commission chooses not to renew their membership.
3. On July 21, 2026, Member Jay Shechter resigned from the AHAC, creating a vacancy in the Advocate for Low-Income Persons Category.
4. Ms. Karen Trent has expressed interest in serving on the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. She is currently employed at one of the City's affordable housing apartment communities, where she regularly interacts with and serves low-income residents. Her professional experience provides her with firsthand knowledge of the housing needs and challenges facing this population, qualifying her to serve in the Advocate for Low-Income Persons Category.
5. Administration recommends that the City Commission appoint Karen Trent to fill the vacant Advocate for Low-Income Persons Category position on the AHAC.
