MOTION TO APPROVE THE APPLICATION FOR THE FY 2025 EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT (JAG) PROGRAM TO ENHANCE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT’S REAL-TIME INTELLIGENCE CENTER

Summary Explanation and Background

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:

1. In collaboration with sixteen (16) eligible law enforcement agencies in Broward County, the Police Department has been allocated $27,583 from the U.S. Department of Justice as its FY2025 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) share of the $604,449 allocated to the Broward County region. The Justice Assistance Grant funds may be used for any legitimate law enforcement projects, as defined by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The funding allocation is determined by a formula that is based primarily upon the preceding year crime data reported to the F.B.I. and population trends.

2. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is now requiring all JAG applicants to have their project submissions approved by city leaders. Approval of the police department’s application is required to comply with the intent of the grant solicitation.

3. Broward County will act as the countywide lead agency for the 2025 Justice Assistance Grant process and may deduct 10% of the City’s award for administrative and management purposes. The total amount Pembroke Pines will receive in grant funds is $24,824.70.

4. The police department proposes the purchase of (2) Motorola APX850O Base Radios and (2) Origin desktop computers as their FY25 JAG project to enhance the Police Department’s real-time intelligence center. The real-time intelligence center supports camera monitoring, License Plate Recognition (LPR) Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), and incident response operations for the city’s Police Department.
