Summary Explanation and Background

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:

1. The City Commission is committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and public trust.

2. Historically, the City’s Police Department has issued ceremonial badges to elected officials as a gesture of appreciation for their public service.

3. While the ceremonial badges were intended to be symbolic in nature, the City’s Commission recognizes their appearance may create confusion among members of the public regarding the authority of elected officials.

4. The City Commission wishes to avoid the potential for misuse of ceremonial badges, whether intentional or inadvertent, which may lead to concerns with public safety, liability, and the integrity of the Commission.

5. The City Commission finds that eliminating the custom of issuing ceremonial badges to elected officials will align with the goals of promoting transparency, accountability, and public trust.

6. Nothing herein is intended to diminish the City’s appreciation for the public service of its elected officials nor the gratitude for the recognition by the City’s Police Department.

7. In light of the foregoing, the City Commission of the City of Pembroke Pines, Florida, deems it to be in the best interest of the City to formalize a policy prohibiting the issuance of honorary badges to elected officials.
