MOTION TO APPROVE THE FIRST AMENDMENT TO THE INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES AND THE CITY OF MIRAMAR RELATING TO THE PURCHASE OF BALLISTIC ENGINEERED ARMORED RESPONSE VEHICLE.

Summary Explanation and Background

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:

1.                     On June 16, 2010, the City Commission approved the police department’s request to jointly purchase an armored response vehicle (Bearcat) with the City of Miramar.

2.                     At the time, Miramar Police Department did not have the protected facilities available for permanent storage of this vehicle.  As such, the agreement stated that the vehicle would be stored within Pembroke Pines at a facility controlled by the Pembroke Pines Police Department.  Further, the vehicle would be regularly maintained by the Pembroke Pines Police Department, with costs for repair and maintenance to be jointly shared.

3.                     Miramar Police Department now has secure facilities to properly house this vehicle.

4.                     The Pembroke Pines Police Department has since acquired a second armored rescue vehicle and recommends that the original jointly owned and operated armored rescue vehicle (Bearcat) now be housed with the Miramar Police Department.  Miramar would regularly maintain this vehicle, with costs and repairs jointly shared.

5.                     The Pembroke Pines Police Department would maintain access to and use of the vehicle and recommends approval of the amendment to the interlocal agreement.

6.                     The amendment has been reviewed and approved as to form by the city attorney’s office.
