Summary Explanation and Background

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:

1.  The Recreation & Cultural Arts Department is requesting City Commission approval to license a children's exhibit, Children's China: Culture, Character and Confucius at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery and Exhibition Hall for the Summer of 2020.  The exhibit will create a level of excitement for children and families to visit and learn about China together.

2.  The goal of the exhibit is to create a multi-sensory indoor space for kids to learn about China. The Children’s China exhibit transports families to a country where a quickly-changing modern lifestyle intersects with ancient values.  Visitors will discover the many similarities and differences in modern day Chinese culture. Children’s China integrates the time-honored teachings of Confucius, China’s great teacher, with a focus on the importance of education and family values.

3.  The objectives of the six different immersive environments are as follows:

- Discover how the people of China are caring for endangered species at the panda reserve.

- Shop for local produce at a traditional neighborhood market and then prepare a healthy meal while working in the restaurant.

- Learn how families celebrate the Chinese New Year and participate in a dragon parade at the great achievement hall.

- Learn to write Chinese characters on a calligraphy table at school and create paper flowers and cards to celebrate National Teachers' Day.

- Exercise by using equipment that encourages fitness at the park.

4.  Pursuant to Section 35.18(C)(3) of the City's Procurement Co...
