Summary Explanation and Background

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:

1.  The Dual Enrollment Program at Broward College is an accelerated program that allows eligible public/ charter school students the opportunity to earn high school and college credits at the same time.  The Pembroke Pines Academic Village Charter High School has participated in this program since school year 2001-02.

2.  The Academic Village Charter High School (AVCHS) has been required to cover the cost of student textbooks required for the Broward College dual enrollment courses since the inception of the dual enrollment program.

3.  For the FY2019-20, the AVCHS will receive four dual enrollment textbook invoices, one for the 2019 Fall Term, one for Spring Term 2020 and two for the Summer Term 2020.  The AVCHS has projected the total cost of these invoices to be $50,000, and will cover this cost from the FY2019-20 adopted budget.

4.  Broward College utilizes vendor Barnes and Noble for instructional materials for the dual enrollment program, and as such, requires the purchase of dual enrollment course textbooks from Barnes and Noble.

5.  Pursuant to Section 1007.271(6)(b) of the Florida State Statutes, " Instructional materials used in dual enrollment courses must be the same as or comparable to those used in courses offered by the postsecondary institution with the same course prefix and number.
