MOTION TO APPROVE A CONTRACT FOR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT’S PARTICIPATION IN THE PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE SAFETY ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN.

Summary Explanation and Background

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:

1.  The Florida Department of Transportation, through a partnership with the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, is seeking law enforcement support to educate and enforce safe pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver behaviors in high priority counties identified throughout the state. The main objective of this effort is to reduce traffic crashes and fatalities involving pedestrians and bicyclists through the use of selected traffic education and enforcement operations.

2.                     Funding in the amount of $12,000.00 has been made available to the Pembroke Pines Police Department on behalf of this effort. The funds can only be used to reimburse officer overtime costs plus associated fringe benefits incurred while conducting High Visibility Enforcement of all road users, including pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

3.                     Attached is the contract to allow the Pembroke Pines Police Department to participate in this campaign.

4.                     The Pembroke Pines Police Department will conduct a total of twelve (12) High Visibility Enforcement operations, set to begin upon execution of this contract & issuance of a purchase order by the University of South Florida. Operations will end no later than May 15th, 2020.

5.                     The contract has been reviewed and approved as to legal form by the City Legal Advisor.

6.                     Recommended approval for this agreement.
