MOTION TO ADOPT PROPOSED RESOLUTION 2020-R-02.
PROPOSED RESOLUTION 2020-R-02 IS A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES, FLORIDA, NAMING AND DEDICATING N.W. 125th AVENUE WITHIN THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES “ABRAHAMS-TORRES AVENUE” IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 100.02 OF THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES CODE OF ORDINANCES; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO BROWARD COUNTY AND THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION; DIRECTING THE APPROPRIATE CITY OFFICIALS TO TAKE ANY AND ALL ACTION NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE INTENT OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:
1. At the December 4, 2019 Commission Meeting, under OLD BUSINESS, Vice Mayor Siple introduced the matter and asked that the Commission agree by consensus to direct the City Attorney to draft a resolution on the renaming of Taft Street at 125th Avenue "Abrahams-Torres Avenue", and have a special event for the naming.
2. In October 2011 and November 2018 there were two traffic fatalities in that area. Vice Mayor Siple said she received a request from the families of Cassie Tianna Torres and Alexandra Thomas Abrahams to rename 125th Avenue "Abrahams-Torres Avenue."
3. A motion was made by Vice Mayor Siple, seconded by the entire Commission, to direct City Manager to have a special event for the naming.
4. In 2011, Alexandra Abrahams, a 14-year old resident of the City was killed when a driver struck her at the intersection of Taft Street and N.W. 125th Avenue.
5. In 2018, Cassie Tianna Torres, a 15-year old resident of the City was killed when a driver struck her bicycle at the intersection of Taft Street and N.W. 125th Avenue.
