PROPOSED RESOLUTION 2021-R-53 IS A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES, FLORIDA, ERECTING A STATUE OF MAHATMA GANDHI IN WILLIAM B. ARMSTRONG DREAM PARK; NAMING THE STREET ENTERING THE WILLIAM B. ARMSTRONG DREAM PARK “PEACE WAY”; NAMING THE FUTURE BUILDING IN WILLIAM B. Summary Explanation and Background

 

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:

1.  Mayor Ortis introduced an addendum item for discussion on May 1, 2019 for discussion and possible action in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, to authorize erecting a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the William B. Armstrong Dream Park and naming the street entering the park “Peace Way.”

 

2.  The approved motion was amended by Commissioner Castillo to include the naming of the center as the “Gandhi Center.”

 

3.  Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian activist who was the leader of the leader of the Indian Independence movement against British colonial rule.

 

4.  Mahatma Gandhi employed nonviolent civil disobedience and inspired movements for civil rights, diversity and freedom across the world.

 

5.  The City of Pembroke Pines is known for its commitment to the arts and cultural diversity. 

 

6.  In accordance with Section 100.02 of the City’s Code of Ordinances, the City Commission finds it to be in the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City to: (1) erect of statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the William B. Armstrong Dream Park, name the street entering the William B. Armstrong Park “Peace Way” and name the future building to be erected in the William B. Armstrong Park after Mahatma Gandhi.

 

7.  On September 29, 2019 the City named the entrance road to Spring Valley Park "Peace Way" in a dedication ceremony that had over 100 people in attendance. 

 

8.  This resolution shall become effective upon its passage and adoption by the City Commission.

 

Financial Impact

FINANCIAL IMPACT DETAIL:

 

a)   Initial Cost:  No cost for naming the Recreation Center.  The City has budgeted $50,000 for a public art piece related to this resolution.  Expenditure of these funds will follow the procurement procedures.
