PROPOSED RESOLUTION 2021-R-53 IS A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES, FLORIDA, ERECTING A STATUE OF MAHATMA GANDHI IN WILLIAM B. ARMSTRONG DREAM PARK; NAMING THE STREET ENTERING THE WILLIAM B. ARMSTRONG DREAM PARK “PEACE WAY”; NAMING THE FUTURE BUILDING IN WILLIAM B. ARMSTRONG DREAM PARK AFTER MAHATMA GANDHI IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 100.02 OF THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES CODE OF ORDINANCES; RECOGNIZING HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES; DIRECTING THE APPROPRIATE CITY OFFICIALS TO TAKE ANY AND ALL ACTION NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE INTENT OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:
1. Mayor Ortis introduced an addendum item for discussion on May 1, 2019 for discussion and possible action in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, to authorize erecting a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the William B. Armstrong Dream Park and naming the street entering the park “Peace Way.”
2. The approved motion was amended by Commissioner Castillo to include the naming of the center as the “Gandhi Center.”
3. Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian activist who was the leader of the leader of the Indian Independence movement against British colonial rule.
4. Mahatma Gandhi employed nonviolent civil disobedience and inspired movements for civil rights, diversity and freedom across the world.
5. The City of Pembroke Pines is known for its commitment to the arts and cultural diversity.
6. In accordance with Section 100.02 of the City’s Code of Ordinances, the City Commission finds it to be in the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City to: (1) erect of statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the William B. Armstrong Dream Park, name the street entering the William B. Armstrong Park “Peace Way”...
